Cremation arrangements include the farewell, the required documents and the eventual resting place of the remains. Asking only for the cremation fee is therefore not enough. The family should understand the whole process and any responsibilities after the farewell.
Check the deceased person’s wishes first
JKP Pogrebne usluge states that cremation takes place where the deceased expressed that wish during their lifetime, with the application submitted by the closest relative or an authorised person. Ask the responsible service how this is established and which documents are required.
If the family is uncertain about the person’s wishes or relatives disagree, do not assume any family member can decide alone. Explain the circumstances to the service responsible for checking eligibility.
Discuss the farewell
Before booking, agree whether the family wants a religious or civil farewell, who will notify attendees and whether anyone will speak. If you wish to include a religious ceremony, check its availability and form with the relevant religious community.
Confirm the gathering place and time. Ask whether the farewell, cremation and placement of the urn happen at different times, and when the family will be told about the next stage.
Where the urn is placed
JKP describes options including a grave, tomb or urn niche, as well as the Garden of Remembrance. It also restricts release of an urn to the family, with an exception where an available grave at another location is demonstrated.
Do not plan to keep an urn at home or scatter ashes independently based on films or rules in another country. Obtain specific instructions for the arrangement you have chosen.
What the quotation should show
Ask for transport, equipment, the farewell, cremation and the chosen resting place to be listed separately. Check which charges may arise later and to whom they are payable.
Mention any existing family grave at the beginning. The cemetery administration must confirm whether the intended arrangement is possible; the family’s use of a grave does not automatically mean it is ready for urn placement.
Is cremation always less expensive than burial? Only a comparison of the complete services and final resting place can answer that.
Can the urn be transferred elsewhere? Check the requirements, documents and transport arrangements for that specific destination.
